How do I choose the right pillow?

How do I choose the right pillow?

A good pillow is essential for a comfortable and restful sleep. The right pillow can provide the necessary support for your head, neck, and shoulders, which can help reduce pain and discomfort, improve your posture, and enhance the quality of your sleep. However, with so many different types of pillows available, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you.

The first thing to consider when choosing a pillow is your sleeping position. If you sleep on your back, a thin, flat pillow is usually best. This will keep your head and neck in a neutral position and help prevent any pain or discomfort. If you sleep on your side, a thicker, firmer pillow is typically recommended. This will help support your head and keep your spine in alignment. If you sleep on your stomach, a very thin or no pillow at all is best.

Another important factor to think about is the filling of the pillow. There are several different options available, including memory foam, latex, down and feathers:

Memory foam

Memory foam pillows are a good fit for people who are looking for a pillow that conforms to the shape of their head and neck, providing customized support and promoting proper spinal alignment while reducing pressure points. They are known for their ability to reduce pain and discomfort, and they provide a good level of motion isolation. Side or back sleepers tend to prefer these pillows.

Latex

Latex pillows are a good fit for people who are looking for a pillow that provides excellent support and pressure relief, as they conform to the shape of your head and neck, promoting proper spinal alignment. They tend to be more firm and bouncy than memory foam. Additionally, they are naturally hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, and antimicrobial, making them a good choice for people with allergies or asthma. They maintain their shape and support over time, because they are durable and long-lasting. Side and stomach sleepers tend to prefer these pillows.

Down and feathers

Down and feather pillows are a good fit for people who are looking for a pillow that is soft and fluffy, providing a plush feel. They are also good for people who like to fluff and adjust their pillow. On top of this, these pillows regulate the temperature very well. Back or stomach sleepers tend to prefer these pillows.

Shape

The shape of the pillow is also an important factor to consider. A contoured pillow can help keep your head and neck in a neutral position, while a traditional rectangular pillow can be more versatile. There are many different shapes of pillows which all come with their own benefits. With pillows, also different gradations in softness exist. The softness you pick depends on many factors, such as preference, the way you sleep and your weight.

The cover

It’s also worth mentioning the importance of the cover of the pillow. Some pillow covers are made with breathable materials like cotton to help regulate the temperature and keep you cool throughout the night. Some have an added feature like cooling gel to provide a cool sensation.

Ultimately, the best pillow for you will depend on your individual preferences and needs. It may take some trial and error to find the perfect pillow, but taking the time to find the right one can make a big difference in the quality of your sleep. In our showroom in Amsterdam you can take your time and try out these different types of pillows.

Our wooden beds

Our wooden beds

When you are looking for a sturdy bed, design is sometimes forgotten. One of the best raw materials to make a robust but nonetheless a beautiful bed is wood. Here at Slaapkamer Amsterdam, we deliver primarily wooden beds, because we are enthusiastic about these beds. In this blog is explained what kind of wooden beds we sell, where they come from and how they are manufactured.

Firstly, the wooden beds themselves

On the collection page you can already view some photo’s the wooden beds in our collection. After this you can read about how the beds are made and what kind of quality the beds.

Three brothers and a shed

The wooden beds that are presented in our store are built by our Swiss supplies Hasena. Originally, Hasena is a family company which was established in 1951 by three brothers: Paul, Will and Felix Hasenfratz. In a small shed they learned to put slatted bases and beds together. They seemed to have talent, because in a few years this shed expanded to a factory. Their slogan was: “From tree to bed”.

A wooden bed, completely personalised

To personalise the wooden beds to your own taste, the Swiss bed concept was invented. This is a modular system concept to adjust the bed to your liking. As a result, the bed can be put together with different feet, corners and headboards which can be adjusted in height. On top of this, there is a great variation in colours and woods that can be chosen with every bed. There even are bedside tables and other accessories that match the style of the beds. With these options, your bed will be perfectly adjusted to your bedroom and taste.

Quality first

For over 70 years, Hasena has been manufacturing quality wooden beds. These beds are made of different kinds of wood like Oak, Akazia or Birch. The wood is tailor-made and finished with a protective layer, so the beds will last for over 20 years. Small parts and weak feet are avoided to ensure the sturdiness. In addition, almost all the wood that is used is FSC approved. This approval means that the wood is not harvested from non-renewable sources: al the wood is cut in forests that are maintained responsibly. The goal of Hasena is that in the near future all their products are approved with the FSC stamp.

We have been experienced in choosing the right wooden beds for over 40 years

In our time as bed store we have worked with different manufacturers of wooden beds. Because of this, we have a good understanding of the varying qualities of wooden beds. With our current collection we have never had a complaint about the build quality of the beds and we never had to repair something. If you want to view the beds, please feel free to make an appointment!

Next Life Down

Next Life Down

Our supplier Ducky Dons has started a new initiative: the Next Life Collection. This collection of down pillows and duvets is manufactured using 100% recycled down and feathers. The down adn feathers are selected from old pillows and duvets that are retrieved from textile companies, thrift shops and now also from our store. Read this blog for more info.

How are the pillows and duvets recycled?

Down and feathers are seperated from old pillows and duvets and thoroughly cleaned. The pillows and duvets are retrieved in cooperation with thrift shops, textile companies and drop off points. As we stand behind the initiative to make products more sustainable:

You can now drop off your old pillows and duvets for at our store.

This means that you can bring old down pillows and duvets for free to our store to have them recycled.

Next Life pillows and duvets

Down and feathers selected from the recycle phase are processed and manufactured in a new collection of duvets and pillows named: Next Life. The products in this collection have a biological cotton cover with 30% down and 70% feathers. The origin of the recycled down and feathers is unknown, but the quality of the product rivals that of newly manufactured pillows and duvets. The Next Life collection is produced by our supplier: Ducky Dons.

Moving Forward

Moving Forward

2019 was a busy year for us, we have moved from the Ceintuurbaan in Amsterdam North to the Jacob van Lennepstraat in Amsterdam West. With that we have changed to a new approach of our store. We have had a lot of help from our friends, family and partners. In this blog we explain why and we changed our store into a showroom. We also tell our experience of moving the store and want to thank everyone who helped us achieve this. This blog is written by Ben Cornelisse, maintainer of this website and the son of Wouter en Brigitte (owners of Slaapkamer Amsterdam).

A refreshing look

Wouter and Brigitte are the owners of Slaapkamer Amsterdam and have been for over 16 years. The method of the store had always been the same before the move, namely a store with regular openingtimes and a neat shop window. They have always wanted to do things differently, maybe it is the stubbornness of Wouter: Wouter has been delivering his beds and mattress by himself since he has been running the store and has even been abroad to put a bed together. Or maybe from the creatvity of Brigitte: She always tries new things and is for example busy marbling silk pillow covers.

From a normal store to a showroom

We have always functioned as a regular store, where we were opened from 10:00 untill 18:00. This meant making a lot of hours every day, as Wouter also delivers beds before opening. The idea of a showroom, a store where you can make an appointment to look at bed and mattresses, has been on our mind for while now. A showroom has two major benefits in our eyes: Firstly more time is available for the customer, because the customer will be the only customer in the store. Secondly we can better our time management, as we do not have to be opened for the whole day.

Why move from the Ceintuurbaan?

Even though we have a lot of nice memories of the Ceintuurbaan, this street has been getting more crowded by tourists. This is why we had the feeling that it was getting less of a shopping district, especially for a bedstore. With that we do not think a shopping window is a necessity for our new showroom, since we are expecting more online reach. We have moved to an office space located in the Jacob van Lennepstraat. This space is almost as big as the space when we were located at the Ceintuurbaan.

The move

Firstly, plans had to be made for the interiour of our new store. For example we had the idea of a gas fueled fireplace, an example hotelroom and more. Pictures of the 3D model made by Choc Studio are displayed below.

In the month of August we were closed to realise our move. All of the stuff from our store was moved into our storage in Haarlem when we were painting our new location. After the paint had dried, we have constructed the toilet and sink ourselfs. Even the housing for our new gas fueled fireplace we build ourselfs (look at the pictures below). Our goal was to create a more clear and calmer environment. We think we achieved this very well and are proud of the result.

A new look

After moving we also changed our look. For instant our logo and website were a bit outdated and we wanted to make these more welcoming. So we have changed the red logo to a green pistachio tint and the website has gotten a better appearance. We strive for clear and easy contact between the customer and hope that our new look radiates this. Please make an appointment visit the store for yourself!

We want to thanks everyone who helped us during the move:
